DIY Ideas for the Weekend

Happy Thursday/almost Friday! This week has absolutely FLOWN by. I’m anxious for the weekend so I can work on some craft projects and visit with family. We’re celebrating my birthday this Saturday with lasagna (my favorite) and cheesecake.

To help everyone get into the crafty mood, here are a few projects for the weekend:

November 1st

I can’t believe it’s November already. Every November 1st is the start of the Christmas season at DeBrand and I am beginning to get into the holiday spirit…but I have to enjoy the rest of fall first. I’m excited for my upcoming birthday celebrations (the big 2-5) and getting together with family for Thanksgiving. November is absolutely my favorite month!!

To celebrate November, I searched the month in Etsy and found some lovely things:

A: Fall themed hair pins from PlumePretty
B: Golden wheat art print from RetroMenagerie
C: Autumn colored yarn from CandySkein
D: Gold citrine earrings from JenniferCassady

Also – I found some nice desktop wallpapers for the month of November at SmashingMagazine.com. Enjoy!

Strawberry-Banana Smoothies

Happy Halloween! It doesn’t seem our apartment complex does trick or treating, which is sad, but not really because we were not prepared at all. We decided if we had candy in the house we would end up eating most of it and that’s no good.

Instead, we made natural Strawberry-Banana Smoothies!

Note: I never measure any of this out. Start with a little milk and if your blender doesn’t blend, add more. A Tbsp. of honey should do it. FROZEN bananas are a must, it makes your smoothie taste like it has ice cream in it. Sometimes I get crazy (ha!) and add different types of fruit or use orange juice instead of milk.

New Look & Adorable Pins!

Yes, I’ve updated the look of my blog again. Although I LOVED the look of my old blog style, this setting is more user friendly and I’m very excited to have a side bar again…notice the new photos to the right. I hope you all like it, let me know your thoughts and if you like/dislike the change!

Also – I have to share this adorable pin from hugaporcupine on Etsy:

Halloween

My family stopped celebrating Halloween when I was little, but I enjoy making Halloween decorations now that I’m an adult. This weekend, I’m going to make Zombie cupcakes to share at work on Monday – that is if I don’t eat them all before then. I’m including the recipe below in case you’d like to join me. (Thank you www.cutefoodforkids.com for the zombie hand recipe and AllRecipes.com for the homemade cupcakes!)

Zombie Cupcakes

INGREDIENTS
– 1 cup white sugar
– 1/2 cup butter
– 2 eggs
– 2 tsp. vanilla extract
– 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1-3/4 tsp. baking powder
– 3/4 cup milk
– Frosting (I’m going for the store bought kind)
– 1/4 bag pink candy melts

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line your cupcake tins with liners (I’m going for black).

Cream sugar and butter in a bowl for several minutes (until light and fluffy), then beat in the eggs (REALLY WELL), one at a time. Stir in vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder with a wire whisk, add half of the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternating with the milk and mix well until the batter is smooth. Finally stir in the milk until batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan.

Bake for 20-25 minutes. For directions on the spooky zombie hands go here. Have fun!

I also wanted to share a fun template for your front door (download here). I have to mention that I didn’t come up with it on my own. I found the idea online and traced a photo of the design.

Sweater Weather

I am loving this sweater weather! But, I am not loving the rain. Fall is my favorite season, but it always goes by too fast. One thing I love about Fall is the motivation I get to be crafty.

I was at Wal-Mart this weekend with my family and could not stop looking at the yarn and thinking of all of the wonderful things I could make. But, then I think of the quilt sitting in my bedside drawer waiting to be completed. Or, the slipcover that is staring at me every time I pass our chair in the living room, begging to be worked on. I’m very good at starting projects, but unmotivated to finish them. Starting projects is just so much more fun!!

Nonetheless, here are a few things I would like to start:

A Crocodile Patterned Scarf:

Tile Coasters (possible Christmas gifts, maybe?):

Impressive embroidery:

Custom Wax Seal:

And because I’m a crazy cat lady, I will leave you with this (I hope you enjoy it as much as I did).

Thankful for Thursday

The weekend is so close I can’t stand it! As I sit here waiting for Parks & Rec to come on I came across a few inspiring business cards. I would love to create new business cards for myself with a letterpress design. I found this site, The Mandate Press, that has some awesome letterpress designs on it and a few more just browsing the web:

And I also found this awesome paper art:
